St Margaret

St. Margaret is the patroness of our Parish, of Dunfermline, and indeed of Scotland.  Here we see her depicted as Queen of Scotland in the stained glass window within the small chapel of Edinburgh Castle.  On the left below are the words to the hymn "Great St. Margaret" which is sung at each anniversary Mass on her feastday of 16th November.

Queen Margaret of Scotland is a historic figure.  The facts of her life can be found by clicking on either of the links below under the heading "History of St. Margaret".

Hymn - "Great St. Margaret"  (Lyrics:- James Quinn S.J.)

Great St Margaret, pearl of Scotland from your throne in heav'n above pray for us who sing your glory in the Kingdom of God's love. Queen and Patron, wife and mother show to us your chosen way serving Christ in all who need us till the dawn of endless day.

Born in holy Stephen's Kingdom to a prince of English race and his wife of royal lineage child of Europe, child of grace.

Pray for Europe's many peoples, pray for grace-filled harmony. Pray that Christ may sow among us Peace, the fruit of unity.

Young in years, you sail to England there to grow in sanctity, where your kinsman, good St Edward reigns in true humility.

Teach us how to grow in wisdom Teach us how to be like you: may the breath of God's own Spirit warm our hearts, our love renew.

Faced with war, you flee for safety seeking peace in sorrow's hour. Teach us how to cast our troubles on God's mercy, on God's power.

Show us how to live each moment when the skies are dark and drear: when we flee from Satan's malice may God's angels banish fear.

Borne to Scotland seeking refuge here you find an exile's home, Now you reach your pilgrim's haven, here to stay, no more to roam Here you wed a loving husband. Warrior-king with heart of gold, now you rule a gracious household treasury of grace untold.

Glory be to God the Father. Glory be to God his Son. Glory be to God their Spirit, persons three, in godhead one. Praise to Mary, God's own Mother praise to Margaret, pearl of grace. May we meet in heaven's glory, there to see God face to face.
